Whether you’re looking to enhance a single room or looking to decorate your entire home, you need to carefully plan ahead to stay within your interior design budget.
Decorating within your budget isn’t about being cheap or cutting corners, it’s about being smart and planning.
I’ve put together a few tips to keep in mind when it comes time to budget your interior designs.
Know Your Space
The first step towards budgeting your interior designs is to know your space. This means knowing the exact square footage of your property to be developed and enhanced.
Take a look around your space. Will you be redesigning your first floor, the second floor, a single room or your entire property?
Once you have determined the square footage of your space to be developed, you can easily convert to square meters.
Simply, multiple your square feet by .09 to determine the exact square meters to be developed.
Determine How Much Your Interior Design Will Cost
Determining the exact cost of your interior designs comes down to your specific needs.
Generally speaking, a complete interior design can cost up to 20% of your total property value. For example, if you purchase a new AED 3 million home, you can expect to spend up to AED 600k on your interior designs.
However, you can start on the lower end at 10% and work your way up over time. Generally speaking, 10% of your property value would include the following for your interior designs –
- Furniture – couches, sofas, chairs, dining room sets, bedroom sets, etc.
- Carpets – throw rugs, areas rugs, hallway runners, etc.
- Decorative accents – art, paintings, sculptures, knick knacks, etc.
- Bedding – bedspreads, throw pillows, and cushions.
- Gypsum works – ceiling accents and enhancements.
- Lighting – switching light bulbs from halogen to LED, automation, solar power, etc.
New vs. Old Homes
When your home was built will play a major role in how much you can expect to invest into your interior designs.
New homes – homes built within the last ten years generally have good flooring, new wardrobes, updated bathrooms, updated lighting, and updated fixtures.
When you purchase a newer home, typically your interior design budget will focus on the decor, paint, furniture, and art.
Old homes – homes built more than ten years ago may require a refit to add more square footage. In addition to budgeting your addition, you may need to update your floors, bathrooms, and lighting schemes.
For example, homes built in Meadows or Hattan are more likely to require major renovations than new constructions.
Do You Need to Update Your Bathrooms?
Renovating, enhancing, and upgrading your bathrooms will account for a big portion of your interior design budget. Materials range from low end to high end.
If your bathroom includes a feature wall made of onyx marble you can expect to pay more for the high quality of marble. Marble and porcelain accents for walls and floors will cost more than cheaper materials.
You can save money if you are open to purchasing materials made in China from the Dragon Mart.
On the other hand, strictly branded materials will cost more. As you look around your bathroom, decide on what needs to be updated. Think beyond the sinks and shower.
Do you want to add a jacuzzi, steam machine, or other spa elements? Generally speaking, a bathroom renovation will cost between AED 20,000 to AED 100,000 per bathroom.
Your exact price point will depend on what you add and what materials you choose for your interior designs.
Work With An Interior Designer
Working with an interior designer will help you determine the exact budget of your interior designs.
Your interior designer will take every aspect of your design into account. From planning an addition to placing the art on the wall, your interior designer will provide a breakdown for both materials and labour.
Your home is more than just a space. It’s the place for you to create a life with your family and friends. When you plan ahead you can create your dream space well within your determined budget.
